Holt and Stone with Stone’s dog Priam

Houston in June 2009

In the midst of the devastating storms, we are and have been so thinking of and feeling for Houston as it tries to recover from Hurricane Harvey. And as always, wishing, aching we could be worried about Holt and Stone there, a place they loved, and were completely happy to be together. Knowing they would be among those out rescuing others.

We remain concerned for all the homeless people we support through The Beacon of Houston, where Stone and Holt volunteered. And we have worked on how we can support more.

Dear friends of Stone's and Holt's in Houston were planning We Kare-eoke on the very weekend that Hurricane Harvey overwhelmed Houston. The event was rescheduled for Saturday, September 30. Photographs will be in the next newsletter.

After the hurricane’s impact on Houston, The Foundation is sending additional funds to The Beacon Day Center and to the Community Foundation for the Greater Houston Region's Hurricane Harvey Fund.

Hurricane Maria Damage and Destruction at an Apartment Complex on St. Croix, US Virgin Islands

The unfortunate people of the U.S. Virgin Islands next suffered two epic, historic Category 5 hurricanes within 12 days. In response to the devastation caused by Hurricane Irma on St. Thomas and St. John, we sent financial support to the Community Foundation for the Virgin Islands’ hurricane relief fund.

Now, after Hurricane Maria -- because of the intensity of destruction  and the immense need on St Croix, another of the US Virgin Islands -- The Foundation is sending additional support to the Community Foundation for the Virgin Islands’ relief fund.

We continue to be grateful to many for their generosity, making it possible for The Foundation to respond to these unexpected disasters. The love and loyalty of friends -- old and new -- continue to keep alive the amazing spirits and good works of Holt and of Stone.

MDA Chicago Camp 2017

In June, The Foundation sponsored campers at -- and sent creative gifts to -- the two Muscular Dystrophy Association summer camps that we support. One in Chicago, where Stone volunteered, and one in the DC area.

"The maracas and decorations were a huge hit," writes Chicagoland camp co-director Hayley Opgenorth. "It was a great activity for the campers and their counselors to do together that first day while they were acclimating. They were all over the place getting painted and being used at the camp fire."

The Foundation sponsors Rock Star volunteer awards at both camps -- in Chicago, the winners were Jenica Geoulekas and Justin Ukleja. "They truly went above and beyond the call of duty, being flexible and energetic and ensuring our campers had the very best week possible.," writes Hayley. "I know they made Stone proud."

You can see photographs of the Chicago and Washington area camps -- and the profoundly moving video made at the Chicago Camp here.

We Kare-eoke *Washington*

** More dear friends of Holt’s and Stone’s in the Washington area are planning We Kare-eoke *Washington* -- to benefit all of The Foundation’s beneficiary organizations -- for Thursday, December 21. The event will again take place at Flanagan’s Harp & Fiddle in Bethesda, Maryland. The Friends of the Foundation report, “We have a new format this year with bigger prizes to benefit the Foundation.”

Again and always, thank you for your continuing support.

Always for Holt and for Stone,

Love

Jan and Linton
